Creating a Welcoming Guest Room | Part 2: Furnishings

We are continuing our four part series on creating a welcoming guest room! Part 1 was on selecting a paint color and today we are going to cover furnishings.

Furniture Essentials

Your furnishings can vary depending on the size of your room, who your guests are and the length of their stay, and possibly what type of flooring the room has. The main items you will want are a bed frame, mattress, nightstands and seating. You may want a dresser to hold extra linens, guest towels, and for your visitors to use for longer stays.

When designing a room, I like to pick one element to direct the aesthetic and be the inspiration of the design! In the previous post I mentioned some vintage prints that were the inspiration for this project. Going off of the aesthetic and colors in the prints, I wanted to bring warm tones into the room and this beige and charcoal diamond patterned loloi rug was just what I was looking for! If your room has carpet, you may want to forgo a rug.

We then selected a queen sized bed frame and then nightstands. I love the dark wood tone mixed with the black metal of this bed frame to give warmth, but not feel to heavy in the smaller 10’ x 11’ room. The open slats on the headboard and the open nightstands will help the smaller room feel bigger since the eye can travel through the space.

For this project we discussed what else would be ideal in both need and fit. We decided on a vintage wooden dining chair. It provides a place to sit, as well as hold some items the guests may have but doesn’t take up too much room. We then chose to refinish a tall vintage dresser with paint and selected Iron Ore by Sherwin Williams as the color. Cleaning up the brass hardware restored it’s shine!

Other Considerations

Other items to consider depending upon need and space available would be adding a bench at the end of the bed and/or using a larger arm chair. Below are some examples that I love!

In Part 3 we’ll talk all about textiles, art, and other accessories to bring coziness into the room. I can’t wait to finally show you the art that was the starting inspiration for this refresh! You won’t want to miss it!

If you are interested in creating a special space for your guests, or are ready to tackle your own room I’d love to connect and learn about your vision!
