Creating a Welcoming Guest Room | Part 3: The Details

I hope you are as excited as I am for today’s post - Part 3 in our series! We are going to dive into the details to pull together this cozy guest room with color and texture! Let’s begin!

The Inspiration

I teased it a little in the first two blog posts about the inspiration for this room. You may know that I love to bring vintage pieces into my designs and of course this project was no different. Out on one of many trips to my favorite vintage shops I came across these early 1900’s prints. One was labeled “ ‘Long’s Peak-Estes Park’’, 1928 Denver, Colorado” and the other two were labeled “early 1900’s original Wallace Nutting signed print”. I knew they would be perfect for this project as our jumping off point for aesthetic and vibe! We of course then selected our paint (Pewter Green by Sherwin Williams) as our next step.

Bedding + Textiles

When I think of my experiences either at hotels, short term rentals, or staying at other people’s homes, bedding is one of the things that comes to mind first. I can think back to times spent trying to sleep because I was too cold (lack of layers) and on the flip side the best sleep I ever had. I believe that experience was due to the amazing bedding! (in case you are curious, that stay was at the CityFlats hotel in Holland, Michigan. Two words for you - bamboo sheets!)

Having bedding options and layers available for your guests is a must-have! No need to break the bank, but provide lovely, soft sheets, and several varying layers on top of that. For this guest room we selected a nice smooth sheet set (my suggestions are sateen or percale), added a linen quilt in natural, and then a crisp white comforter. Having other laying blankets available like this chunky knit bed blanket in warm brown and a lighter smaller throw blanket (thrown over the chair in this room) is a nice way to add lots of texture and depth!

Having a good set of pillows is also important! I like to go with a set that is somewhere in the middle - not too hard or too soft. I also provide king size pillows or body pillows for added comfort.

Additional blankets and pillows can be stored in the closet or dresser!

Lighting

Let’s talk lighting! As I mentioned in Part 1 - this smaller bedroom does not have an overhead light so we want to make sure there are several light sources in the room. I started with two matching lamps for the nightstands and then added a third, different style lamp on the dresser (which I made sure was plugged into the light switch outlet for easy use)! I love the mix of these clear glass lamps with the heavier look of the marble lamp on the dresser! I also chose bulbs that cast a little warmer light as opposed to cool.

Art and Other Details

I love these large framed tree prints from Amazon which we hung over the bed. I also hung a round wooden mirror above the dresser. On the dresser is a candle (choosing a subtle scent is recommended or if your guest is sensitive to smells you may want to skip the candle) and a little box of matches, a faux potted plant, and a vintage brass bird. On the nightstands I have another candle, a small vintage wooden bear, leaving room for the visitors own items! I very much enjoy pulling together small details that make a big impact!

The Final Look!
